EVAN Dental Tissues Workshop

by Monika Tanzer last modified 2006-07-28 10:30

This EVAN Workshop will represent a balance between a symposium-style program featuring several lectures from world leaders in the study of tooth growth and structure, brief research reports, and several interactive workshops on the theoretical and technical aspects of conducting such studies.

The full resources of the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology will be presented during tours, and small workshops will take place within state-of-the-art Dental Histology, Computed Tomography, and Virtual Paleoanthropology Laboratories.

Additionally, several informal social events and networking opportunities will be coordinated within the historic Leipzig city center, and numerous opportunities will be available for formal and informal discussions between scholars and EVAN fellows. In order to represent paleoanthropological applications of dental tissue research, this workshop plans to unite a select group of international researchers with the intent of synthesizing studies of living and fossil hominoids. A special issue of the Journal of Human Evolution will be produced that will represent select papers delivered at the workshop.

Recent developments in virtual paleoanthropology, such as the application of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and synchrotron micro-CT to the study of dental tissues, have yielded exciting data on three-dimensional morphology and inter-relationships of dental tissues. This workshop will promote novel ideas and collaborations between researchers who have extensive experience with either tooth histology or virtual imaging techniques. It is anticipated that this workshop will lead to new insights into dental tissue research, new projects on the management and dissemination of histological and digital data, and new collaborations among the participants and EVAN fellows.

Graduate students and post-docs will benefit greatly from this opportunity for hands-on experience and a more personalized opportunity to interact with scholars than at traditional conferences or symposia.
